Barhale JV has signed off on a £18m project to upgrade the Dewsbury Sewage Works in Yorkshire. The work is part of Yorkshire Water’s £500m investment in phosphorous removal and will help to improve the quality of the region’s rivers and streams.

The project will involve the replacement of several of the existing primary settlement tanks with three new, larger tanks and two new primary sludge pumping stations. The new tanks will be pre-cast off-site to minimize disruption to the sewage works and will be 8.5m deep and 45m in diameter.

The project is expected to take two years to complete and will create around 50 jobs. Once completed, the upgrade will help to ensure that the Dewsbury Sewage Works meets the Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP) targets for phosphorous removal.

Barhale JV is a joint venture between Barhale and Enpure, two leading UK civil engineering and water treatment companies. The company has a strong track record in delivering complex infrastructure projects and is committed to delivering the Dewsbury Sewage Works upgrade on time and to budget.

The Dewsbury Sewage Works upgrade is a significant investment in the future of Yorkshire’s water environment. The project will help to ensure that the region’s rivers and streams are clean and healthy for generations to come.

  • The Dewsbury Sewage Works treats wastewater from a population of over 100,000 people.
  • Phosphorous is a nutrient that can cause algae blooms in rivers and streams. These blooms can deplete oxygen levels in the water, which can harm fish and other aquatic life.
  • The WINEP targets for phosphorous removal are designed to protect the environment and improve the quality of water for people and wildlife.
